Stepping out of the boat

When I read in the Bible (Matthew 14.22) about Jesus walking on the water out to his disciples, who are in a boat, after he told them he would catch up to them, I ask Why?

Why did Jesus walk out there. On the water.  Over a kilometre. Why not just appear in the boat?

I guess it was because of what happened next.

His disciples didn’t recognise Him. They had no idea it was Jesus. They thought he was a ghost and were terrified.

So why did he walk out there? Just appear in the boat! Surprise them but don’t freak them out!

Immediately Jesus spoke to them. “Have courage! It is I. Don’t be afraid.”  (Matthew 14.23)

Peter, for some reason, then says boldly – “Lord if it is you – then command me to come out to you” – and Jesus simply says “Come”. Peter has the will to go and when commanded by Jesus he just goes.

I’m not sure at what point on his water walk Peter realised it was Jesus out there. He stepped out of the boat and started walking, on the water!

What I am sure about is that as soon as Peter started sinking he cried out to his Lord and Jesus was right there.

Stepping out of the boat

This event helps me to have loads more confidence to go where Jesus calls me to go. Wherever I am He has gone there before me. He shows me in this event that I can do all things through him who gives me strength.  I need to have a genuine willingness to go and do what he wants, when he reveals it.

And it’s not just for the “big” things in life. It’s for the everyday life experiences:

  • that girl’s crying – should I ask her if she is OK?
  • that guy might need a hand fixing that tyre – should I stop and help?
  • I haven’t really talked to that person before – maybe I should see if they want a coffee?
  • I know that guy lives on the streets – should I offer to shout him lunch?
  • the neighbours mower isn’t starting – should I go over with mine?

The Bible is chockas with details on how God wants us to live. he has already revealed to us the things that he wants us to do. We don’t need to wait until we hear a special voice from him, repeating himself. He’s already told us and Jesus has shown us.

Love God, love others. Put other people first, if you can help someone in need, do it. People are eternal and God loves them eternally. How could we not?

So step out of the boat, stepping into those places where you might be uncomfortable, out of your depth or just into something new. Jesus has gone before you and is your strength.

Live his image.
